Education Required to Become a Petroleum Engineer

In order to become a petroleum engineeer, you must have a high school depolma or the GED equivalent. You must obtain a bachelor’s degree in petroleum engineering, which takes approximately four years.

While it is not necessary, it is recommended to obtain a masters degree to ensure that you are at the top of your game and you are ready to take on the world of petroleum engineering.

Licensing and Certification

Every state requires that you obtain a license if you plan to practice as a self-employed petroleum engineer. However, if you plan to work under a licensed engineer, licensing is an optional step in your progress to success.

In order to increase your salary potential, you can obtain varous certifications if you are properly trained and have the knowledge and time to complete the testing requirements to obtain state licensing that is related to the certifications you obtain.

In order to become a petroleum engineer, you must have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree. Most bachelor’s degree programs take four to five years to complete. Funding Your Education

There are a wide variety of methods to fund your education, especially if you are considered within the low income bracket.  The most commonly used financing options are loans, grants and scholarships.

Loans

There are three different types of loans that can be used to fund your education. Each type of loan depends greatly on your current financial situation.  The three types of loans are personal, federal subsidized and federal un-subsidized loans.

Personal Loans

Personal loans are a great way to finance your education if you have great credit and a current stable income. This option should be reserved for those who do not qualify for federal grants, loans or scholarships.

Grants

Grants are very similar to loans in the way they are processed. However, you must meet certain income requirements in order to qualify for government grants through the FAFSA form.

Unlike loans, grants do not have to be repaid. However, there is a limit to the amount of grant funding you can receieve through federal grants.

Subsidized Loans

Subsidized loans are a great way of fuding the portion of your education that grants do not cover. Subsidized loans provide a great option for those who qualify under the low-income line. Subsidized loans do not accumulate interest while you are still in college. They do not begin accumulating interest until you graduate.

Unsubsidized Loans

Unsubsidized loans do accumulate interest while you are in college. Some students may be required to pay this interest on a monthly basis, depending on their income.

Scholarships

One of the most overlooked funding options that college students bypass are scholarships. Scholarships are a great way to get additional funding for your college eduation.

Scholarships are awarded based on a set of criteria that  is developed by the scholarship fund. This could be writing an essay, maintaining a certain GPA, or posessing a certain skill or disability.
