SFU votes to separate from the CFS

Friday, March 21st, 2008

This week SFU had a referendum to decide membership in the corrupt Canadian Federation of Students, and i just heard that it was a success. They needed a minimum of 5% of all students to vote, and ended up getting around 20%, plus they needed a simple majority of voters and they got 67%. [...]

calligraphy tips

Friday, October 12th, 2007

I had another calligraphy class yesterday, and learned a few more tid-bits. The class was a little sparse on instructional time because most of the people in the class are beginners at chinese and the instructor only speaks chinese. However, i was able to glean a few pieces of information from the instructor [...]

language frustration

Thursday, October 11th, 2007

I’m feeling pretty down about my classes this week. Last week was the nationwide holiday, and i felt like i made some progress. Instead of going out travelling to touristy destinations with my classmates, i decided to hit the books. Spending several hours per day with my nose to the grindstone, i [...]

3 lessons in, still going strong

Thursday, May 31st, 2007

Our schedule still seems pretty cramped, but i love the opportunity. Today we fulfilled our part of the free-Go-lessons bargain by trying to teach our instructor some english. She already has a half-decent knowledge of english, but with low vocab. I think she might be about the same level of english as [...]

Weiqi lessons in china!

Tuesday, May 29th, 2007

Today was definitely the best day of the trip so far. Jon and i decided to go out to take a look at a Weiqi (aka Go, a strategy board game that we are obsessed with) school that we heard was down the street. Previously, we’d been searching high and low for a [...]

almost done chin291

Saturday, March 17th, 2007

Lately it feels like i have nothing to write about since i’m just doing the same thing day in and day out. This week feels a bit transitional, though. Thursday i finally got my passport; the canadian passport offices are swamped because we now need to have a passport in order to enter [...]

general stuff (in chinese)

Monday, February 26th, 2007

Considering an extended stay in china

Saturday, January 27th, 2007

I’m still super busy with class. haven’t had much time for anything except homework and studying, although i did manage to ride my bike up the mountain yesterday for the first time in 3 months. On thursday we attended a meeting about our upcoming flight to china in may, and we heard from [...]

swamped

Friday, January 19th, 2007

I’m really busy with school lately. Suddenly it feels like i’m falling behind in class, but maybe it’s because i’m comparing myself to this one guy who already speaks cantonese and seems to be catching on to mandarin really damn fast. I really need to work on speaking and listening, i think. [...]
