The Paleo diet or Paleolithic diet consists of what our ancestors consumed during the Paleolithic era which ended around 10,000 BP (before present). It is made up of fish, vegetables, pasture raised meats, eggs, nuts, and roots, basically what was found to be available during that period of time.

It is argued by proponents of the Paleo diet that an individual will experience better health and less disease than when a traditional diet is followed, which makes a certain amount of sense. Eliminating processed sugar and processed foods from the human diet has already been proven to improve overall health.

Eliminating junk foods from our diets is one way to not only lose weight, but also to maintain healthy bones, teeth and skin. The processed sugars and chemicals found in junk foods such as potato chips, cookies, and white bread have been shown to be detrimental to our health, causing heart disease, skin problems, loss of teeth, and diabetes.

If an individual has food allergies switching to a Paleo diet may prove to be the key to eliminating the allergy. Many food allergies are caused by the chemicals found in the food itself, so switching to a diet that is chemical free will cause the allergies to cease. Many are recently becoming aware of the allergies caused by glutens, which can be found in many types of cereal.

Individuals who suffer from chemical imbalances such as depression, anxiety, and ADHD have shown improved mental health when foods laden with chemicals are eliminated. Sleep disorders, chronic fatigue, even something as simple as a headache can be caused by chemical imbalances in the body. The pituitary gland which produces hormones that regulate blood pressure and the reproductive system can also be adversely affected by chemical imbalances.

If a woman finds that she is having a hard time conceiving, the food she ingests may be to blame. For productive hormone levels to be maintained the correct levels of vitamins, minerals and amino acids must be present. By eliminating unnecessary grains in the diet the digestive tract is less stressed and able to absorb these needed nutrients for easier conception.

The inside of an individual is reflected on the outside of their skin and if an individual consumes too many starchy foods, too much sugar or alcohol, or too many fried foods it will show. Many who suffer from rosacea, eczema, or acne will find that if they change their diet these skin conditions may clear. Consuming enough water every day and eating foods that are not processed and rich in nutrients will help to clear up many skin issues.

If an individual would like to make changes to their family’s diet but are unsure where to start, consulting a nutritionist would be the first step. A nutritionist will be able to analyze the family’s current diet and make suggestions as to what could or should be changed and even help to design a customized diet plan.
