ok, i just had to post some more. I really liked these two articles from alternet, both on an environmental theme:
- Ten Ways to Prepare for a Post-Oil Society. This one had some great predictions about what features of our society will remain feasible in the coming years as oil production falls. He discusses the problems with cars (and the faulty logic of trying to switch to differently-fueled cars. they’re still cars). He also discusses all the many ways we transport our precious knicknacks around the globe and how trucking will have to die off, as well as predicting the increase of sail-based water transportation. I don’t really agree with his prediction about the death of universities, since he seems to be making it based purely on the idea that it’ll be hard to commute there, but i don’t think people would have that much trouble commuting 20km or 30km to university by bike, if they were already used to cycle transportation as a way of life. All around, this is a great article though.
- Vegetarian Is the New Prius: this article discusses the faux-environmentalism of hollywood celebrities that just buy a different type of car and call themselves “green”. Instead, the author contends that individual people can make more of an environmental impact by going vegetarian. There are so many interesting statistics in this article: “Producing a calorie of meat protein means burning more than ten times as much fossil fuels as does a calorie of plant protein”, “Animal agriculture takes up an incredible 70% of all agricultural land and 30% of the total land surface of the planet”, etc. Basically it highlights how meat production (especially at the massive scale we do it today) is a huge strain on the local and global environment. It’s a compelling argument for vegetarianism, even without considering the ethical and health reasons. I thought this article combined well with the previous one, since i think we’ll be forced to adopt locally-grown vegetarian eating styles in the future as part of the oil crisis.

I read about that “Vegetarian is the New Prius” article a few weeks ago. It’s based off of a UN report. I thought the information was amazing and was surprised that it didn’t get any coverage outside of the blogsphere. The production of meat also causes an obscene amount of shit…literally…and the methane gas results in an incredible amount of greenhouse gasses.

Oh and the new tattoo looks really beautiful. Did you design it yourself?

i came up with the theme and some of the ideas, but i took in pictures and sketches to Trevor, the tattoo artist, and he created the actual design based off that….which is great, because i can’t draw worth shit. ;)

and in regards to “______”
Doviende, I’m sure you know that this guy (and I’m only assuming it’s a guy) absolutely must call you a hippie for no other reason than to define himself in opposition to you. Then he also must regurgitate the nationalistic definition of “peace” in a way that justifies the atrocities in which he took part.
This is also how oppressive governments achieve genocide.
All of this results in him despising anyone who is critical of what he has been taught to stand for…. so much that he visits blogs and posts comments that make everyone feel sorry for him.
