great ride today
i went out with ryan g today to do some riding. We’re both preparing for the 200km Randonneur ride next saturday, so we decided to do the first half of the route today.
We met at the Patullo bridge, between New Westminster and Surrey (about 20km southeast of downtown Vancouver) at 9:30am. This was about 20km from each of our houses, so it turned out to be a good meeting spot. From there we rode along River road in delta until we reached the Reifel Wildfowl Refuge on the west side of Westham Island. This is pretty much the most western point in the vancouver area that you can ride your bike to. After that we turned around and went through the south part of delta until we got near Surrey, and then turned north towards the Alex Fraser bridge. We split up there and went our separate ways home. 109km for me, and 115km for Ryan.
I was quite happy about the ride, since i seemed to get approximately the same split time for 100km as i did last week, except several kilometers of this ride were along gravel paths that slowed us down. I also felt a lot less tired during the ride and afterwards. During last week’s Pacific Populaire ride, i started feeling really burned out at about the 80km mark, and sorta struggled the rest of the way, but today i felt good until about the 99km mark and then i was almost home. Afterwards i still feel pretty good…not totally and utterly exhausted like i did last week. So…something’s working ;)
For those who are curious, i had a bowl of cereal with a banana for breakfast, a granola bar at 25km, then had 2 bagels at the 35km mark, another bagel at the 65km mark, and 2 donuts at the 80km mark. I also took 2 litres of gatorade with me, and used up 1.5 of it during the trip…which wasn’t much, but it was cool and cloudy. If it was sunny i would have had to drink more and refill somewhere.
This week i’m hoping to get at least 50km in each day, and probably do another 100km on monday or tuesday before it gets too close to saturday, and probably resting on friday.
Ride hard, ride free
