cycling today
ok, so my legs felt kinda stiff today from the running yesterday. i’m discovering that running is much different than cycling, despite the bit of crossover. different ways to use some of the same muscles, i guess.
since i was still feeling it from the running, i decided to go for a bike ride today. i wanted to see if i could get my heart-rate up as much as i did running. I usually have trouble getting a good cardio workout while cycling. It really feels like a lot of cardio when i’m pedalling even faster than usual, even if i’m not fighting a wind or anything; if i have a tailwind pushing me that is forcing me to pedal faster, i get tired from the cardio part even though i’m not exerting much muscle force. That’s when i’m pedalling faster than about 120rpm. At my normal cruising speed, i’m usually between 90-110 rpm, so not as much cardio.
My ride today was out to Westham island and back. 24.3km in 58 minutes of riding time, with a top speed of 45.5km/h on flat ground. there’s some room for improvement. i think i can bring it up to 30km in 60 minutes of riding time with not too much work.
Tomorrow it’s time for some swimming (if i can find my bathing suit). speaking of missing bathing suits, i think there’s a Wreck Beach Society swim this week, at a swimming pool in kitsilano somewhere. i might hit that up. Anyway, tomorrow is swimming with my friend mark, and probably some upper-body weights in the weight room. should be a blast…mark’ll have lots of swimming technique tips for me.
