bike lock alert
so, i just stumbled upon this page here, where they claim that several types of kryptonite U-locks can be picked in under 30 seconds using just the outer tube from a Bic pen.
go check your locks folks. i don’t have a kryptonite, but mine’s a circular sort of key like that, so i’m gonna give it a shot when i get home.
Update: looks like there are fancier tools available to do this anyway, but at least the $100 price-tag puts it out of the convenient reach of anyone near a dollar-store. it’s just absurd that a standard flat piece of plastic could pick these expensive locks.
Update 2: i’ve heard from quite a few people, now, who have independantly verified this with several varieties of kryptonite locks. the only defense seems to be to buy the ones with house-key type locks instead of the circular key.
Update 3: dude. check out the video links here. the first one is damn fast. wouldn’t attract any attention on the street.
Ride hard, ride free, with a good lock.
