quick update on stuff
hey all. i didn’t get much writing done on the weekend, but i did get a request for some updates on the housing stuff.
We have a tribunal thingy on thursday, over the phone. My roommate Joey is handling that. Basically, they’re gonna say “you claim that you never got proper notice and that the late notice they gave you is void…” and then they flip through to the fake notice and say “ya, this here notice is void”. boom, we win. there’s a little bit more to it than that…read on for more…
The landlord is gonna try to claim that we’re all illegal because the official leaseholder just recently moved out…despite the fact that we don’t have to get any fancy permission if he wants to sublet his room. To counter this idiocy, we’ve submitted copies of the last two rent cheques which are from me to the old landlord. This shows that i have a financial relationship with him, and therefore am a legal tenant.
Besides all this legal nonsense that we think we understand, we’ve got some other reasons to be really confident. The first is that this guy named Stefano came by. He’s from a company called “Eviction Services Vancouver”, and was hired by the new owner. Stefano drives a crown-vic and wears sunglasses, out of some kind of cop-envy or something. He’s a pretty by-the-book kind of guy, and he ended up saying that he thinks our claim is valid…we didn’t get proper notice, according to him. Our guess is that he’s trying to endear himself to us, hoping he can make a better deal, but i’m still surprised that he’d admit their claim is bunk.
The second reason for our confidence is that the former owner’s real estate agent has also basically admitted defeat. She came by last wednesday or thursday at about 10pm and begged to talk to us. She told us a little sob story about how she wasn’t the bad guy, but she made a mistake in not giving us proper notice, so couldn’t we please just move out in 3 days to help her out? And this is after spending the past month trying to strong-arm us out, saying things like “you should have been gone already” at the beginning of august, and “you have to be out by August 15th” on like August 10th.
Anyway, so both of these goofballs are trying to play really nicey-nice with us now, and have both admitted that their side is fucked. they keep thinking that just saying “think of the poor owner, sleeping on his friend’s couch” is gonna make us accept some stupid deal that puts a ton of stress on us. I guess they shouldn’t have spent so much time telling us how stupid we were and how our stuff was gonna be tossed into the street by the cops or something.
