Tuesday, August 31st, 2004

quick summary: the new owner of our house is an ass-hat, and he tried to threaten us to get us to move out by the 31st (ie today), but we’ve filed for arbitration and are sticking it out. click ‘more’ for more ;)

weekend update

Monday, August 30th, 2004

I was hoping to do some writing on the weekend, but it ended up just being a whirlwind of activities and i didn’t get time. After friday’s critical mass, and spartacus fundraiser, saturday’s confrontation with the landlord and Electric Moon Bananas ride, and then sunday’s fundraising receipt-writing, the Little 100 bike race, and a [...]

quick update

Friday, August 27th, 2004

Hey all. sorry about the slowness of updates lately. I’ve been particularly stressed with the whole roommate/landlord thing, and i haven’t been writing as much as i’d like to. just trying to keep my head above water.
I hope the critical mass bike ride goes well today. i won’t be able to [...]

some interesting links

Wednesday, August 25th, 2004

I don’t want to make MLP a habit, but i stumbled upon these two interesting sites today.
FreewayBlogger is a site with some easy suggestions about how to do some billboard modification and public space reclamation. seems like a good way to get a message out there. Cars typically keep commuters seperated from the [...]

review of “Punished by Rewards”

Monday, August 23rd, 2004

I’m currently re-reading an excellent book entitled “Punished by Rewards: The Trouble with Gold Stars, Incentive Plan$, A’s, Praise, and Other Bribes”, by Alfie Kohn. Kohn gives a variety of reasons [...]

Monday, August 23rd, 2004

i just read an article about the complicity of medical professionals in torture in iraq, and it suddenly clicked with some other stuff i’ve been reading lately. In the article, the author says “How does one find doctors who will abandon their oath and comply with such flagrant criminal activity? Does the Pentagon have [...]

fight the power (of landlords)

Saturday, August 21st, 2004

So we decided amongst ourselves that it’s time to fight the landlord. They never gave us written notice, and even the timing of the verbal notice means that we have at least until october 1st until we have to move. If we go by the written notice then we might have to move [...]

barriers to public nudity?

Thursday, August 19th, 2004

Ever since my sunday trip to wreck beach, i’ve been thinking a lot about public nudity. Why are we so afraid of it? What reasons do we give ourselves not to go against our trained fear? What societal purposes does fear of nudity serve? read on for my take on the [...]

landlord update (updated!)

Thursday, August 19th, 2004

I thought i’d make an attempt to keep people up-to-date on the ongoing saga of our move. In the last installment, i mentioned that we didn’t get to move last sunday and that our future landlord was just gonna check our work references and then we’d be in at $1100/month. we naively thought [...]

fixed-gear ride recap

Tuesday, August 17th, 2004

ahhh, yet another successful fixed-gear ride completed. for those who’ve forgotten, there’s a ride for fixed-gear riders every monday at 6:30pm at Bean Around The World at 20th & Main. So, this time there were only 4 of us, but we had a good time nonetheless. i learn lotsa new places to [...]
